Evie was born on April 6th at 8:30 AM weighing 1lb 13oz. She was only 25.1 weeks gestational age. It was weeks before we were able to hold Evie for the first time, a month before she could wear clothes, months before she could eat a bottle or sleep in an open crib. She spent 130 days in the NICU fighting to come home with her mommy and daddy.
Since her birth Evie has overcome so many obstacles including learning to eat and breathe. Evie had pneumonia twice as well as ecoli in her lungs when she was very little. She had numerous breathing and stomach issues and frequently was unable to be fed. She has bilateral grade 2 brain bleeds, retinopothy of prematurity in both eyes, PDA in her heart and chronic lung disease which requires her to wear Oxygen when she sleeps.
Thanks to her AMAZING medical team and all of your prayers and support Evie is not only surviving but she is thriving. All of her medical providers cannot believe how amazing she is doing. Every day she achieves a new milestone and gets better and better.
Today Evie weighs 16 lbs and wakes up with a smile and a giggle every morning. Evie is so patient and sweet at all of her follow up appointments and continues to impress the doctors with her cuteness and her great personality.
Evie is our little superhero! Until her tiny lungs are strong enough for her to run on her own, we will pound the pavement in her honor. Although we have run many half marathons in the past, this year will be extra special. This year we will spend all 13.1 miles giving thanks for family, friends, doctors, nurses, therapists and our friends at Hand to Hold. We will spend each training mile filled with gratitude for everything and everyone we were blessed with in 2015. I hope that you all will consider joining us this year for a fun race day!
Hand to Hold has a team that is running the Austin Half Marathon and the Paramount 5K. Hand to Hold provided very special bedside support to Jonathan and I while Evie was in the hospital and they have done so much for us as a family and for me as an individual since I met them. Raising funds for this mission will ensure that all families have the support they need after welcoming a medically fragile child into their family. This support is vital for families who are experiencing the trauma of an unexpected NICU stay.
We are so blessed and thankful for our little EJ! We hope that everyone can support our team in the 2016 Marathon, Half-Marathon and 5K! When the race is over we can all celebrate with mimosas!
Jennifer, Jonathan, Evie, Violet and Archie!
